Course Structure
Stage 1
- Foundation of Children's and Young People's Nursing: Students will explore the fundamental underpinnings of CYP nursing, including the principles of child and family-centered care and of health assessment appropriate to the chronological age and development stage of the infant, child, or young person.
- Safe Medicate 1: This module provides essential numeracy and problem-solving skills that underpin medication dosage calculations preparing students for safe clinical practice.
- Public Health Perspectives: Students will explore how health is conceptualized locally and globally, demonstrating understanding of the role of public health in maintaining the health of individuals and communities.
- Caring Communication in Nursing: Students will demonstrate understanding in a range of communication skills that are integral to person-centered care across all fields.
- Evidence-Based Nursing 1: Students will be introduced to the concept of evidence-based practice and how this can be used to improve the quality and safety of person-centered care.
- Essential Life Science and Foundations of Pharmacology: Students will be introduced to the principles of biological science and terminology, including tissue, cell, and fluid homeostasis, and the pathophysiology of long-term illnesses.
- Professionalism in Nursing: This module will cover the essential knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors required to demonstrate accountability by nurses in all care settings.
Stage 2
- Caring for the Child and Young Person with Long Term Needs: Students will further explore the principles of child and family-centered care and of health assessment appropriate to the chronological age and development stage of the infant, child, or young person.
- Safe Medicate 2 - Children and Young People: This module provides increasingly complex numeracy and problem-solving skills that underpin medication dosage calculations preparing students for safe clinical practice.
- Caring for the Acutely Ill Child and Young Person: Students will examine the principles of child and family-centered care and of health assessment appropriate to the chronological age and development stage of the infant, child, or young person.
- Working Interprofessionally to Improve Mental Wellbeing: Students will consider the issues of mental wellbeing and what to do when a person's mental wellbeing might be compromised.
- Essential Pharmacology: Students will recognize the journey of a prescription from the assessment process with the patient, to prescribing partnership, supply, storage, dispensing, and administration of that medication.
- Applied Life Science: Students will develop confidence in bioscience knowledge, competence in integrating biosciences in evidence-informed clinical decision-making and care, and communication with multiprofessional teams and patients.
Stage 3
- Inter-Professional Working: Students will collaboratively work and communicate with other members of the healthcare delivery team using interprofessional learning-based activities.

- Supporting Infants, Children, Young People & Families with Effective Transitions Across Services: Students will critically examine what transition means to infants, children, young people, and their families and the role of the CYP nurse in this process.
- Complex and High Dependency of Infants, Children and Young People: Students will critically apply the principles of working in partnership with the child and family when infants, children, or young people need complex and high dependency care.
- Evidence-Based Nursing for Quality Improvement: Students will be supported to develop the knowledge and skills to be involved in quality improvement processes in practice.
- Applied Pharmacology for Nursing Practice: Students will recognize the various procedural routes under which medicines can be prescribed and understand the policies and regulations and guidance that underpin them.
- Developing Leadership and Professionalism: Students will demonstrate positive knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values in leading and managing care in a diverse health and social care system.
Entry Requirements
- A-level: BCC including a relevant Science (Biology/Human Biology, Chemistry, Life & Health Sciences, Mathematics, or Physics) or BBC where a relevant Science subject is not offered.
- Irish Leaving Certificate: H3H3H3H4H4 at Higher Level where a relevant Science subject is offered (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) or H3H3H3H3H4 at Higher Level where a relevant Science subject is not offered.
- BTEC Level 3 Extended/National Extended Diploma: Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF) or Edexcel BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (RQF) with overall grades DDM.
- Access Course: QUB / UU Access course or Access to Higher Education Diploma with a minimum of 60 credits, 45 of which should be a Level 3 with a minimum of 15 credits at Distinction grade plus 30 credits at Merit grade (Level 3).
