Preparatory Course for International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Overview

The Preparatory Course for IELTS at London School of Business & Finance in Singapore will develop students' level of English to a standard recognised by universities across the world. Students must achieve an appropriate score on an IELTS examination to study an undergraduate or postgraduate course in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and numerous other English-speaking countries.

Programme Aims

At the end of the Preparatory Course for IELTS, students are expected to be able to apply the skills and strategies taught throughout the course to successfully complete the IELTS test which the student has to register externally.

Learning Outcomes

• Listening: Social needs & concerns, monologues, education/training Academic
• Reading: Reading efficiently, using appropriate and time-saving reading techniques
• Academic Writing: Communicative quality in sentence structures and presenting arguments
• Speaking: Fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical accuracy, and pronunciation

Programme Structure

Assessment

• On induction, students are given a section from the reading, writing, speaking, and listening from the IELTS exam. This will act as a benchmark and give guidance to students on areas for improvement.
• At regular intervals, students are given full practice IELTS tests which will be fully graded and returned to the students for feedback.
• Students will be required to keep a reflective journal and will be given work to complete outside of class.
• Students that are having difficulties making the expected progression will be reported in the logs and given supplemental material and additional support.

Contact Hours

• Full-time: 2 months (8 weeks), Monday – Friday, 3 hours per day (15 hours per week)
• Part-time: 11 sessions, Weekends (Saturday or Sunday) 4 hours, plus 2 hours for IELTS Prep Test

Certificate Awarded

Students will obtain a Certificate of Attendance awarded by London School of Business & Finance upon completion of the course.

Eligibility

Who Can Apply for This Programme

This course is recommended for students wanting to develop skills at a high level in all areas of the English language and to learn strategies for achieving a high IELTS test score.

Entry Requirements

• Minimum Age: 16 years old
• Placement Test: A placement test is administered at the Admissions Office upon the students' arrival in Singapore. Students will be informed of the respective levels they qualify for within one day of the test.
• Recommended Minimum Language Requirement:
  • IELTS 5.5 or
  • An equivalent English Language Qualification or
  • Completed LSBF PCE Upper Intermediate (or equivalent) or
  • Achieved a satisfactory score in LSBF placement test
