Overview

The Data Science: Computer Science Graduate Certificate is a three-course program designed to provide you with an opportunity to deepen your knowledge and expertise in the targeted field of data science.


The certificate provides training opportunities in the areas of fundamental skills on the analyses of big data and their visualizations, predictive analyses using machine learning methods, and data analytics and mining.

Illinois State is the only university in the state with information systems and computer science programs both accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.

University Admission Requirements

  • Have earned a four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a college or university that is accredited by the appropriate regional accrediting association, or do so by the time of program matriculation.
  • Submit unofficial transcripts from each college or university other than Illinois State at which graduate, undergraduate, or non-degree credit was earned. The unofficial transcript should be easily readable and clearly indicate degree(s) awarded, courses and course grades for each term.
  • If admitted, official domestic transcripts can be emailed from the university to or mailed in a sealed envelope to: Illinois State University, Graduate School, 208 Hovey Hall, Campus Box 4040, Normal, IL .
  • If admitted, official international transcripts can be emailed directly from the international institution to or mailed in a sealed envelope to: Illinois State University, International Admissions, Campus Box 6180, Normal, IL .

Additional Program Admission Requirements

  • GPA: You must have a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for either the last 60 hours of your undergraduate coursework or any previous work in a master's program.
  • GRE: Submit your official GRE scores if your GPA is lower than 3.0 (use institutional code 1319).
  • Coursework: You must have completed the following courses:
    • IT 279 (Algorithms and Data Structures)
    • IT 378 (Database Processing) or consent of the graduate advisor
  • English Proficiency Scores (International Students Only): International students must have a TOEFL score of at least 88 iBT, 230 computer-based, or 570 paper-based; the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 7.0 band.
