Outline
Module Objective:
To address the impact of adult hearing loss in terms of communication and quality of life and evaluate strategies for supporting adults with hearing loss, including those with special needs.
Module Content:
Content will include the impact of sudden and progressive hearing loss in adults. The module also considers the psychological and social impacts of hearing loss, and the models which inform our understanding of hearing related disabilities. Further topics include shared decision making in rehabilitation, as well as recognizing patient preferences in the use of amplification and assistive technology.
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Map patient centred rehabilitation pathways for adults who have been diagnosed with acquired permanent hearing loss
- Synthesise and analyse different models relating to the psychological and social impact of hearing loss acquired in adulthood
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of the counselling and communication skills required to support them
- Demonstrate a systematic understanding of hearing impaired adults with complex needs with particular reference to auditory habilitation.
- Reflect critically on and understand primary communication disorders and their effect on the process of accessibility within the context of a patient centred service.
