Course Outline

The Cert in Management Practice will introduce students to key theories and skills related to the practice of management within their own organisation through the lens of self, team and the organisation. The programme is designed to introduce participants to key management principles, best practices and practical ready-to-apply tools in order to help students build their own managerial skill-set, while delivering immediate improvements to their organisation.

The programme has a core focus on people management and will address issues such as employee relations, conflict resolution and HR planning. It will also introduce students to key areas such as managing finance, marketing, strategy and decision-making.

Year 1: Students will complete 30 credits as follows:

  • MG1848: Introduction to Management and Managing Yourself (10 Credits)
  • MG1849: Managing People (10 Credits)
  • MG1850: Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills for Managers (5 Credits)
  • AC1802: Introduction to Managing Finance (5 Credits)

Course Practicalities

Online lectures will be scheduled Tuesday evenings (6.30-9.30pm) from mid-September to the end of May. Certain lecturers may release pre-recorded material to be viewed in advance of the lesson with a shorter live lesson then taking place on the Tuesday evening. We also have six full day (10am to 4pm) workshops on campus per Academic year. The programme is wholly assessed via continuous assessment.

Why Choose This Course

This broad programme will offer students the opportunity to develop greater self-awareness in order to better understand their own strengths and weaknesses. It will allow them to integrate core people management principles into their own practice to improve their performance as a manager and to work more effectively with colleagues and staff. In order for participants to instantly apply their learning to their workplace and make improvements in the day-to-day management of their organisation, this skills-based programme is delivered with a highly practical focus in a very participative environment. Through engaging in class discussion, role-play, case study analysis and group tasks, students will gain practical tools to enhance their own performance as managers.

Who Should Apply

  • The programme will be particularly valuable to managers in any sector who have had little or no formal management training and want to strengthen their managerial capabilities through the completion of a formal third level management qualification that is highly practical in its orientation.
  • It is also suitable for people working in non-managerial roles who wish to improve their career development in preparation for future management roles.

Progression

  • For those working in non-managerial roles who want to progress into management roles in the future, this course will equip them with the necessary skills to do so.
  • For those already in a management role, this will re-skill them in necessary areas and provide a qualification to support existing experience.
  • Graduates of the Certificate in Management Practice can enrol in the one year Diploma in Management Practice and very often go on to study the Postgraduate Cert in Project Management or the Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management.
