The University College Cork (UCC) offers a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module in Psychosocial Interventions in Specialist Mental Health Nursing Practice. Module Objective
The objective of this module is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply a wide range of psychosocial interventions in specialist mental health nursing practice, underpinned by the recovery ethos and the development of a therapeutic alliance.
Module Content
The module covers the application of principles of structured psycho-social interventions, including:
- Motivational Interviewing
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
- Open Dialogue
- Family Therapy or Family-centred care
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the applicability of psychosocial interventions in specialist mental health nursing practice
- Critically evaluate the quality, safety, and effectiveness of psychosocial interventions
- Integrate the principles and practices of partnership and/or co-production into their work with service users and their families
- Apply the principles and processes of engaging service users experiencing mental distress
- Evaluate factors that may help or hinder recovery and reflect on their own specialist practice
Requirements
- Applicants must be practicing nurses with evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
- Applicants must demonstrate evidence of appropriate work experience within an English language environment for at least the previous 2 years if their main language is not English
- Qualifications obtained outside Ireland must meet the minimum academic and English language requirements
