New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support)

Overview

This programme has been designed to provide an introduction to hairdressing and a foundation to build upon with further study. You'll learn about salon culture, hierarchy and terminology so you can communicate appropriately with clients, peers and supervisors. During the introduction to cutting you'll learn basic cutting technology and techniques.

What will I study

• Salon culture, hierarchy and terminology
• Basic cutting technology and techniques
• Limited scope consultation - including hair and scalp analysis
• Elementary styling tasks such as blow drying, moulding, setting and long hair-ups
• Introduction to colour applications, treatments, health and safety and hygiene
• Personal health and presentation requirements of salon environments

Pathway

This programme is also offered for Youth Guarantee students. You can apply for these options if you're 16 to 24 years of age and no longer at school, or if you're planning on leaving school. Please note places are limited on this course and funding may be exhausted throughout the year. If you fail to secure a funded place, you will be required to self-fund.

Fees for 2025

• Domestic Fee: $6,950 - $7,860 per year
• Indicative Student Services Fee: $370.50 per year

Academic Requirements

• This programme has open entry. English language requirements apply.
• This programme is offered through the Youth Guarantee Scheme, and is available to students aged 16 to 24 years old who are New Zealand Citizens or Permanent Residents.

English Requirements

• If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study.
• Please provide a result from a test or qualification on the acceptable alternatives English Proficiency Outcomes Chart.
• If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Ara will contact you regarding a free assessment.
• If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or other test through the Ara Examination Centre or in your home country.
• IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS Test Report Form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.
