Program Overview


Graduate Certificate in College Sport Leadership

The Graduate Certificate in College Sport Leadership is designed for full or part-time graduate students who wish to develop a deeper understanding of college sport leadership and career options available in the field of intercollegiate athletics. Current graduate students and administrative professionals who already possess an undergraduate degree and have an interest in intercollegiate athletics/college sport leadership may benefit from this experience.

The nature of the certificate allows students to tailor their course work based on their professional goals. The proposed certificate will be housed in the Department of Educational Psychology and Higher Education and thus, is connected most directly to the higher education program.

Plan Description

The Graduate Certificate in College Sport Leadership targets full or part-time graduate students who may not have studied intercollegiate athletic/college sport leadership (specific to higher education) through any formal degree program but wish to develop a deeper understanding of college sport leadership and career options available in the field of intercollegiate athletics. Current graduate students and administrative professionals who already possess an undergraduate degree and have an interest in intercollegiate athletics/college sport leadership may benefit from this experience. Credits earned for the certificate may be applied to the degree program in Higher Education at the masters or doctoral levels upon formal admission to the program. Credits earned in the masters or doctorate programs in Higher Education may not be used toward the certificate.


Plan Admission Requirements

  • A qualified student, who wishes to enter the university to obtain the Graduate Certificate in College Sport Leadership without being enrolled in a degree program, may apply for graduate admission. All minimum Graduate College requirements must be met.
  • Doctoral and masters level students who are admitted to and pursuing other disciplines are eligible for the certificate program in college sport leadership. Students must complete and submit an application. Enrollment may be limited based on class size.

Course Requirements

  • Total Credits Required: 15
    • Required Courses Credits: 6
      • IPSM 603 - Issues in College Sport
      • IPSM 606 - Intercollegiate Athletic Administration
    • Electives Credits: 6
      • Complete a minimum of 6 credits from the following list of courses:
        • EDH 609 - Leading Diverse Organizations
        • EDH 727 - College Students in the United States
        • EDH 703 - History of American Higher Education
        • IPSM 711 - Sport Marketing
        • EDH 719 - Institutional Advancement
    • Internship Course Credits: 3
      • EDH 690 - Masters Internship

Certificate Requirements

  1. Completion of a minimum of 15 credits, including 3 credits of internship in an intercollegiate athletic department as a culminating experience.
  2. Students must earn a B or better in all courses.

Certificate Completion Requirements

Certificates will be awarded upon the student's successful completion of all certificate requirements. Students may apply for graduation up to two semesters prior to completing their degree requirements. All required forms must be submitted to the graduate college.
