Kia kaha te reo Māori! Build your skills and knowledge to an intermediate level in te reo. Use your language skills in a wide range of environments such as whānau, marae, community, workplace or academic contexts. Graduates from this programme will have the skills to confidently communicate in te reo with some independence in everyday settings.

Programme Outline

Te Pōkaitahi Reo (Reo Rua) (Te Kaupae 3) intends to build a solid foundation for learners to progress their knowledge of te reo Māori. The teaching of this programme is primarily in English. There are four compulsory courses that are focussed on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.


Courses

  • Mana Tangata Toru: This course introduces learners to intermediate level grammatical structures, vocabulary and speech patterns.
  • Mana Whenua Toru: From this course students will learn to use te reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures to describe the features of kainga tipu of another person.
  • Mana Reo Toru: This course uses intermediate grammatical structures to discuss familiar topics by asking and responding to questions, exchanging ideas and comprehending medium length texts.
  • Mana Ao Tūroa Toru: In this course intermediate level te reo is used to describe and discuss everyday events. Learners will work through phrases and vocabulary relating to hapū or hapori kaupapa.

This programme has two pathways you can choose from:


  • 36 weeks part-time (one night class a week)

Entry Requirements

New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Rumaki Reo Rua) (Level 2) or equivalent. Suitable for school leavers. Recommended secondary school subjects: NCEA Level 1-3 reo Māori.
