BA German and Russian
Overview
The BA German and Russian program is a four-year undergraduate degree that combines the study of German and Russian languages, cultures, and societies. The program is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of both languages and cultures, as well as the skills and expertise needed to thrive in German and Russian-speaking environments.
Course Description
The program includes a range of courses that cover language, literature, history, culture, and society in both Germany and Russia. Students will develop their language skills through core language courses, as well as through independent language learning activities. The program also includes a period of study abroad in a German-speaking country and a Russian-speaking country.
Aims
The program aims to:
- Equip students with the skills and expertise needed to thrive in German and Russian-speaking environments
- Develop students' language skills to a superior level
- Provide students with a deep understanding of German and Russian cultures and societies
- Prepare students for a range of careers, including business, education, government, and the media
Special Features
- Study abroad in a German-speaking country and a Russian-speaking country

- Societies and student organizations, including the German Society and the Russian Society
- Access to the University Language Centre, which offers language resources and support
Teaching and Learning
The program is taught through a mixture of formal lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Students will spend approximately 12 hours a week in formal study sessions, and will be expected to complete a further 2-3 hours of independent study per week.
Coursework and Assessment
Assessment methods vary from course unit to course unit, but may include:
- Written and oral examinations
- Presentations
- Coursework (including library research, linguistic fieldwork, and data collection)
- A dissertation based on a research topic of the student's choice

- Politics and Society in Russia, the Soviet Union, and Post-Soviet Countries
Facilities
The University Language Centre is home to language resources, including a new interpreting suite, purpose-built recording rooms, and resources for over 70 languages.
