Nursing and Midwifery

The Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) prepares students to become registered nurses and midwives in four years. This joint degree allows students to pursue nursing and midwifery careers in various healthcare settings in the private and public sectors.

To be considered for entry into this course, students must satisfy all of the following requirements:

  • Post-secondary qualifications:
    • International entry requirements for post-secondary qualifications can be located in the study credit and admissions eligibility search.
    • Qualifications that are competency-based (without grades or marks) will not be considered for admission.
  • Higher education:
    • Applicants who have not completed Year 12 or above: To be considered, applicants must also complete at least four single units at an Australian higher education institution to satisfy the minimum entry requirements with the minimum average mark required is 70%.
    • Applicants who have completed Year 12 or above: This course uses the entire academic record as part of its selection considerations. To be considered on your tertiary results alone you must complete at least one semester (equivalent to 24 credit points) of full-time study load (0.5 EFTSL) of a recognised university degree with a minimum average mark required of 70%.

Course Structure

The course develops through theme studies in the human bioscience, the sociocultural context of health and illness, clinical assessment and nursing practice, midwifery theory and practice, and professional practice, which come together in nursing and midwifery practice as demonstrated in the clinical placement units.

A: Human Bioscience

These studies provide the foundation knowledge of human anatomy and physiology relevant to the allied health professions of nursing and midwifery. Students will learn about the biological basis of human health and the working of the human body. Students will also develop the capacity to critically evaluate evidence in relation to health.

B: Sociocultural Context of Health and Illness

These studies focus on the social, economic, and environmental factors that are determinants of health and of access to health care. Students will also consider how policy, planning, organisation, and delivery of health and healthcare impact individuals and communities differently and the political and economic imperatives that inform them.

C: Clinical Assessment and Nursing Practice

These studies develop students' clinical competencies for nursing practice. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed for the care of individuals, including the assessment of clients' health status in order to determine and deliver competent nursing care. Students will cover medical and surgical nursing, including pharmacology, pain management, wound assessment, and acute care. Students will also cover mental health care and care across the age span, focusing on evidence-based interventions and management strategies.

D: Midwifery Theory and Practice

The focus of these studies is the effective care for women and their babies during preconception through to early parenting. Students will develop the midwifery knowledge and skills required to work with women throughout labour and birth. Assessment of labour progress, common interventions, and pain management are addressed, as well as the complexities of childbearing and emergency birthing challenges. Students will learn about the assessment and care of the newborn infant, both healthy and ill, and how to initiate emergency management of the newborn infant.

E: Professional Practice

These studies focus on students' development as professionals who are able to function, communicate, and learn as members of a healthcare team and act autonomously as required. It will develop students' understanding of evidence-based practice in healthcare delivery and of their professional responsibilities with regard to ongoing learning. Students will consider the ethical and legal frameworks for health practice and research and the health professional's relationship and obligations to patients, patient families, and professional colleagues in the various healthcare environments.

Fees

Fees are subject to change annually.

• International fee: A$42,900 per 48 credit points, which represents a standard full-time course load for a year.

Scholarships

We offer over 360 types of scholarships, valued at up to $280,000. Some scholarships offer one-off payments while others continue for the length of the course.

Enrolment Obligations

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enrol in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course.
