The Monash Master of Laws (LLM) degree is designed for law graduates wanting to develop in-depth knowledge of a particular legal area or advance their professional expertise in their current field. Regardless of your professional goals, an LLM degree provides you with a springboard to launch or advance your career.

Course Details
The Master of Laws (LLM) is structured in four parts:
- Part A. Introduction to Australian Law,
- Part B. Law Core Units,
- Part C. Law specialisation,
- Part D. Law electives
Part A. Introduction to Australian Law
Your LLM course will begin with foundational studies in Australian law and legal history.
Part B. Law Core Units
Progress through seven core units covering the knowledge, skills and academic requirements for admission to practice law in Australia.
Part C. Law Specialisation
As part of your LLM, you will be able to develop specialised knowledge and advanced skills in a particular area of law that suit your interests, skills and career goals.
Part D. Law electives
Depending on your interests and motivation, you can choose a study program in which you plan and execute a major research-based project with a high level of autonomy and accountability. Through your research, you will be able to focus on information sources relevant to your area of expertise and apply the research methods and specialised knowledge necessary to support law-related work.
Entry Requirements
You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.
Minimum Entry Requirements (International students)
- Qualifications:
- Entry level 1: 96 points to complete, Duration: 2 years full-time: A bachelor degree in law (or equivalent) from a non-Australian jurisdiction. A letter from the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB) stipulating which areas of law are required to meet the academic eligibility requirements for admission to practice in Victoria. The letter from VLAB must be dated within 24 months of submitting your application for study.
- Entry level 2: 72 points to complete, Duration: 1.5 years full-time: An Australian bachelor degree in Law (or equivalent) with at least a credit (60%) average.
- Entry level 3: 48 points to complete, Duration: 1 years full-time: An Australian JD or an Australian bachelor honours degree in Law (or equivalent), OR An Australian bachelor degree in Law (or equivalent) with at least a credit (60%) average and an Australian graduate diploma in Law (or equivalent), OR An Australian bachelor degree in Law (or equivalent) with at least a credit (60%) average and at least 1 year of work based relevant professional experience or other learning approved by the faculty.
Extra requirements
Applicants will be assessed on their entire academic record, with a credit average (or equivalent) preferred.
Applicants using work experience as part of their application are required to submit their CV and one original employment reference (if you were self-employed, you should submit original references from two clients). You should also provide a URL for your organisation.
English entry requirements

- IELTS (Academic): 6.5 Overall score, with minimum band scores: Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 6.0
- or
- Pearson Test of English (Academic): 58 Overall score, with minimum scores: Listening 50, Reading 50, Speaking 50 and Writing 50
- or
- TOEFL Internet-based test: 79 Overall score, with minimum scores: Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18 and Writing 21
- or
- Courses that require English Level A only: Other approved English tests (minimum entry scores apply)

Scholarships

Enrolment Obligations
International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enrol in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course. See standard 8.19 and 8.20 of National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018.
