Entry Requirements

To be considered for entry to this course, applicants must satisfy the following entrance requirements:


  • Minimum Entry Requirements (International students):
    • An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least credit (60%) average, or
    • An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with three years professional work experience and a personal statement, or
    • An equivalent qualification and experience approved by the faculty.
  • English entry requirements:
    • IELTS (Academic): 7.0 Overall score, with minimum band scores: Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 6.5
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic): 65 Overall score, with minimum scores: Listening 58, Reading 58, Speaking 58 and Writing 58
    • TOEFL Internet-based test: 94 Overall score, with minimum scores: Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20 and Writing 24
  • University entrance requirements: Minimum entrance requirements for admission to Monash University Australia.

Extra Requirements

Applicants will be assessed on their entire academic record. Those who have not completed any formal study in the last eight years are required to submit a current curriculum vitae and a completed Monash JD personal statement.


Course Structure

The Monash Law’s Juris Doctor (JD) is designed to equip students with basic legal knowledge and skills required for admission to practice law, plus the opportunity to explore more specialized areas of law. The foundational studies are delivered through three broad themes:


  • Part A. Legal methodology and legal practice: Explores the nature of law, key concepts, principles, and methods of research and reasoning that enable lawyers to identify and interpret law and apply it to relevant facts.
  • Part B. Public law: Includes constitutional law, administrative law, and criminal law, concerning the powers and procedures of the legislative, executive, and judicial organs of government.
  • Part C. Private law: Deals with legal relationships between legal persons, including property rights, contractual rights and obligations, wrongs (torts), and the law of equity and trusts.
  • Part D. Extending specialized knowledge and advanced skills: Enables students to develop specialized knowledge and advanced skills in areas of law that suit their interests, skills, and career goals.

Fees

  • International fee: A$49,200 per 48 credit points, which represents a standard full-time course load for a year.

Scholarships

Monash University offers over 360 types of scholarships, valued at up to $280,000. Some scholarships offer one-off payments while others continue for the length of the course.


Enrolment Obligations

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enroll in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course.
