Program Overview


Introduction to the French/Spanish Program

The French/Spanish program at Western Washington University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the languages, literatures, and cultures of France and Spain. The program aims to equip students with the skills necessary to learn about a culture in depth, with a focus on language structure, literary analysis, and cultural competence.


Program Overview

The French/Spanish program is a 100-credit major that requires students to complete 50 credits at the 200 level or above in each language. The program includes courses in language structure, literary analysis, culture, and civilization, as well as electives that allow students to explore their interests in greater depth.

Student Resources

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures provides students with a range of resources, including academic advising, language tutoring, and cultural events. Students are also encouraged to participate in study abroad programs, which provide an immersive language learning experience and a deeper understanding of the cultures of France and Spain.


Admission and Declaration Process

To declare a French/Spanish major, students must meet with a language advisor and complete a Student Academic Declaration and Change Form. Students must also complete at least one Spanish course at Western and have a GPA of 2.50 or above in both languages.


Grade Requirements

A grade of C- or better is required for all major and minor courses, as well as supporting courses. Students must also maintain a GPA of 2.50 or above in both languages.


Program Requirements

The French/Spanish program requires students to complete 100 credits, including:


  • 50 credits at the 200 level or above in French
  • 50 credits at the 200 level or above in Spanish
  • A minimum of 15 credits at the 300 level or above in each language
  • A minimum of 5 credits in culture and 5 credits in literature in each language

French Requirements

The French component of the program requires students to complete:


  • FREN 301: Grammar Review and Composition
  • FREN 314: Phonetics
  • FREN 401: Advanced Composition
  • One FREN culture course from:
    • FREN 331: Cultures et sociétés de France
    • FREN 332: Cultures et sociétés du Canada Francophone
    • FREN 385: Culture et conversation
  • One FREN literature course from:
    • FREN 340: Introduction à la littérature française I
    • FREN 341: Introduction à la littérature française II
    • FREN 342: Introduction à la littérature française III
  • Electives (25 credits) from FREN 200 level, 300 level, or 400 level courses

Spanish Requirements

The Spanish component of the program requires students to complete:


  • One course from:
    • SPAN 301: Grammar Review and Composition
    • SPAN 311: Spanish as a Heritage Language I
  • One course from:
    • SPAN 302: Grammar Review and Composition
    • SPAN 312: Spanish as a Heritage Language II
  • One course in SPAN culture from:
    • SPAN 331: Culture of Spain
    • SPAN 332: Culture of Latin America
  • SPAN 340: Introduction to Hispanic Literature
  • SPAN 401: Advanced Grammar and Composition
  • SPAN 404: Spanish Linguistics
  • Electives (20 credits) from SPAN 200 level, 300 level, or 400 level courses
