Program Overview
IT Support Technician, Certificate of Proficiency
The IT Support Technician certificate is designed to prepare technicians to work in a wide variety of computer-related industries and has a strong emphasis on A+ Certification and Networking. Graduates will be prepared for entry-level jobs such as computer field service technicians, software technicians, computer operators, installers, troubleshooters, technical salespersons, help desk support, and network technicians.
The IT Support Technician certificate graduates will:
- be prepared to obtain an entry-level position in the IT field
- use basic operating systems tools and utilities in a GUI and command line environment
- install, configure, and administer current desktop operating systems
- identify, install, and configure PC hardware effectively
- utilize file editing tools in a network environment to publish and support Web-based applications
- identify maintenance issues of both closed and open source systems
- demonstrate communication, critical thinking, cultural humility, information literacy, and teamwork skills
- meet Quantitative Reasoning, Social Science, and Written Communication general education distribution area outcomes
Program Requirements
Required Course Sequence
- Quarter One (Fall)
- MATH 87 or AHSE 66 (or placement into MATH 98/MATH 99 or higher) must be completed prior to Quarter One.
- CSNT 115 A+ Software Essentials 6 credits
- CSNT 116 A+ Hardware 6 credits
- ENGL 93 Introduction to Essay Writing I 5 credits (or any Written Communication course)
- Quarter Two (Winter)
- ENGL 93 (or placement into ENGL 99 or higher) must be completed prior to Quarter Two.
- CSNT 124 Open Source Operating Systems 6 credits
- CSNT 125 Shells and Scripts 6 credits
- MATH 98 Essentials of Intermediate Algebra 5 credits (or any higher level Quantitative Reasoning course)
- Quarter Three (Spring)
- MATH 98 (or placement into any higher level MATH/MATH& course) must be completed prior to Quarter Three.
- CSNT 231 Network Fundamentals I 6 credits
- CSNT 232 Network Fundamentals II 6 credits
- PSYC& 100 General Psychology 5 credits (or any Social Science course)
General Education Requirements - 15 Credits
- ENGL 93 Introduction to Essay Writing I 5 credits (or any Written Communication course)
- MATH 98 Essentials of Intermediate Algebra 5 credits (or any higher level Quantitative Reasoning course)
- PSYC& 100 General Psychology 5 credits (or any Social Science course)
Diversity and Social Justice Requirement
Within the degree requirements, students must complete a 3-5 credit course that meets the college’s Diversity and Social Justice (DSJ) requirement. DSJ courses are designed to meet other general education or technical requirements simultaneous to meeting the DSJ requirement.
Total Program Credits: 51
The IT Support Technician certificate requires a total of 51 credits to complete. I-BEST support is available for this certificate, providing students with in-class help in writing and math, notetaking, presentation, study skills, and career readiness. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss sequencing and work out their individual schedule with an advisor. Any developmental coursework a student may be required to complete may increase the program length.
