Program Overview


Program Overview

The Software Development, Certificate of Proficiency, is a four-quarter program designed to prepare individuals for entry-level application development positions within organizations. Students acquire skills to design, code, implement, and maintain programs and database systems that provide computer-based solutions to business problems. The final term involves a project simulating a real-life team-based applications development environment.


Program Requirements

  • Total Credits: 67-68 credits
  • The program is designed to be completed in four quarters, but the student's responsibility is to consult the Class Schedule and work out an individual schedule with an advisor. Any developmental coursework may increase the program length.

Recommended Course Sequence

The following sequence is recommended, but courses may be taken in a different order as long as prerequisites are met:


  • Quarter One:
    • CSD 110 Computer Programming Fundamentals with Python (5 credits)
    • CSD 112 HTML and CSS (5 credits)
    • SOC& 101 Introduction to Sociology (5 credits) (or any Social Science course)
  • Quarter Two:
    • CS& 141 Computer Science I Java (5 credits)
    • CSD 138 Structured Query Language (SQL) (5 credits)
    • MATH 99 Intermediate Algebra (5 credits) (or any college-level, transferable Quantitative Reasoning course)
  • Quarter Three:
    • CS 143 Computer Science II Java (5 credits)
    • CSD 228 Programming with C# (5 credits)
    • ENGL& 235 Technical Writing (5 credits)
  • Quarter Four:
    • CSD 233 C++ Programming (5 credits)
    • CSD 268 Quality Assurance Methodologies (5 credits)
    • CSD, CSNT, DSGN, or GAME Technical Elective course (4-5 credits)
  • Quarter Five:
    • CSD 230 Programming For Mobile Devices (5 credits)
    • CSD 297 IT Project (3 credits)

Technical Elective

Technical Electives may be taken from CSD, CSNT, DSGN, or GAME areas.


General Education Requirements

  • ENGL& 235 Technical Writing (5 credits)
  • MATH 99 Intermediate Algebra (5 credits) (or any college-level, transferable Quantitative Reasoning course)
  • SOC& 101 Introduction to Sociology (5 credits) (or any Social Science course)

Diversity and Social Justice Requirement

Within the degree requirements, students must complete a 3-5 credit course that meets the college’s Diversity and Social Justice (DSJ) requirement. DSJ courses are designed to meet other general education or technical requirements simultaneously. Students should review the class information to ensure the class section includes “course attributes: meets diversity requirement.”
