Program Overview

MSc Advanced Materials

The MSc Advanced Materials is a postgraduate course that focuses on the design, analysis, and characterization of advanced materials. This course is suited to talented chemists, materials scientists, and engineers with a passion for creating and analyzing innovative materials.

Course Overview

The course offers a unique combination of chemistry and project management to develop professional skills and prepare students to join the next generation of materials scientists. With a core interest in materials chemistry, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the relationship between the structure and performance of different materials, the fundamental principles driving the development of innovative products, and strategies for the design and development of novel materials.

Course Information

The course covers a range of modules, including recent developments in materials science, nanotechnology, and how to enhance material properties and characteristics, as well as improve production methods and design. Students will also acquire advanced skills such as applied knowledge of spectroscopic, surface, and structural analysis techniques used by materials scientists as characterization methods.

Features and Benefits

  • Cutting-edge facilities: Learn the latest analytical and materials characterization techniques in the advanced materials lab.
  • Learn alongside world-leading researchers: The course is part of the Department of Natural Sciences at Manchester Met, which is 6th in the UK for the impact of its research in Engineering.
  • Professional impact: The course offers a mix of practical skills, research-led understanding, and industry-standard project management techniques to prepare students for a successful career in the field.
  • Optional placement year: Boost career prospects and put theory into practice with an industry placement year.
  • A UK leader in hydrogen technology: The Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre is the epicenter of hydrogen technology in the UK.

Entry Requirements

  • A UK honors degree – at least a 2:2 – or the international equivalent, in a relevant chemistry or materials-related subject.
  • International students who apply for this course will need to provide an Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate (ATAS certificate) before the University can issue a Certificate of Acceptance of Studies (CAS).
  • Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification.

Fees and Funding

  • UK and Channel Island students: Full-time fee £12,000 per year.
  • EU and non-EU international students: Full-time fee £22,000 per year.
  • A placement fee of £1,850 applies for the optional industry placement.

Careers Support and Prospects

  • The course equips students with the skills to join the next generation of materials scientists.
  • From academia to industry, whether in a technical role driving discovery or a managerial role leading teams, this course can help prepare students for a future at the forefront of materials development.
  • Potential career paths include research scientist, materials scientist/metallurgist, product/process development scientist, quality control chemist/analyst, technical manager, technical sales, consultancy and management work (technical and non-technical), and PhD studies.

Research Areas

The course is rooted in the latest theory and practice, with research areas including electrochemistry, nanotechnology, and sustainable materials. The University is pioneering research into these areas, providing students with the opportunity to learn from world-leading researchers and contribute to impactful projects.
