Program Overview


BSc (Hons) Digital Media and Communications

The BSc (Hons) Digital Media and Communications course is designed to develop the next generation of storytellers and critical thinkers, equipping students with the skills and resources to create powerful narratives across a variety of digital platforms and channels.


Course Overview

This course blends creativity, technology, critical analysis, and real-world application to prepare students for a rapidly evolving media landscape. Students will start by mastering essential skills for a career in digital communications, including research, critical thinking, and technical skills contextualized through the lens of digital media.


Year 1

In Year 1, all students will study the same units designed to develop a strong basis from which to develop an advanced understanding of digital media and communications. Core modules include:


  • Skills Sprint: An extended introduction module that equips students with essential skills and knowledge for success in their studies.
  • Screen Design: A module that focuses on core design principles applicable across traditional and digital media channels.
  • Content Creators: A module that explores the core principles of digital content production for the web.
  • Digital Society and Cultures: A module that examines the dynamic relationship between digital technologies and societal change.

Year 2

In Year 2, students will take further digital media units and will be given a number of optional modules from which to shape the learning of their degree to their own interests. Core modules include:


  • Web Platforms & UX: A module that builds upon the learnings from the Screen Design module, focusing on key practices in contemporary web development.
  • Data Justice: A module that examines critical issues arising from the widespread collection and use of data.
  • Digital Storytelling: A module that builds on foundational storytelling and content creation skills, exploring diverse approaches across genres and digital formats.

Year 3

In Year 3, students will undertake a digital media project, alongside modules that will develop their user experience design skills and commercial awareness. Core modules include:


  • Entrepreneurship: A module that empowers students to turn their ideas into real, viable businesses through action-oriented learning and innovation.
  • Remix: A module that explores the intersection of creative practice and critical thinking in digital culture.
  • Final Major Project: A module that allows students to showcase their 'edge' in the digital economy and the specific voice they have curated throughout their studies.

Entry Requirements

The typical entry requirements for this course are:


  • 104-112 UCAS tariff points
  • IELTS score: 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5
  • Level 3 qualifications: 104-112 UCAS tariff points (e.g., GCE A levels, Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma, Access to HE Diploma)
  • Level 2 qualifications: GCSE grade C/4 in English Language and Mathematics

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees for the 2026/27 academic year are still being finalized. However, information on 2025/26 standard undergraduate fees for UK/Channel Islands and EU/Non-EU international students is available.

The course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the digital media and creative industries. Graduates have gone on to work in a wide range of sectors, including web design, user experience, media production, research and development, project management, teaching, and information management. Some graduates have also pursued further study and professional training, such as the MA International Relations and Global Communications and the MSc Digital Society.

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and independent study. Assessment is 100% coursework, with no exams.
