MEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Overview

The MEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in engineering science, mathematics, and practical project skills, equipping them with the knowledge and expertise required for a successful career in industry or academia.


Course Information

  • The course is a four-year programme that develops key competencies in electrical systems, digital and analogue circuit design, power transmission, and embedded systems.
  • Students have opportunities to specialise in cutting-edge areas such as communications, renewable energy, and automation.
  • The course includes a major individual project and study of the latest developments and challenges in the field.

Year 1

  • Students study the key principles and underlying science and mathematics of engineering.
  • Core modules include:
    • Introduction to Engineering Principles
    • Engineering Skills
    • Further Engineering Principles
    • Design Project

Year 2

  • The centrepiece of the second year is a group project, working with students from other courses on challenges set by industry experts.
  • Core modules include:
    • Programming, Modelling and Simulation

    • Power and Control Engineering

Year 3

  • The third year includes a major individual project and study of the latest developments and challenges in the field.

Year 4

  • The final year includes a major group project, working within a multi-disciplinary team to tackle a complex, current problem in engineering.

    • Management Projects - Professional Practice
    • Engineering Sustainability
    • Group Engineering Project

Study and Assessment

  • The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and independent study.
  • Assessment is through a combination of coursework and examination.

Entry Requirements

  • Typical offer: 112-120 UCAS tariff points
  • IELTS score: 6.0 with no component below 5.5
  • UK students: 112-120 UCAS tariff points, including minimum grade D in at least one of Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics or Pure Mathematics
  • International students: IB Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum overall score of 28 or minimum 112 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects, to include HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

  • Graduates occupy a variety of roles in engineering consultancies, manufacturing, aircraft design and manufacturing, automotive and railway engineering, steel manufacturing, naval engineering, water companies, and the power and nuclear fuel industries.
  • Employers outside of engineering sectors also recognise the skills and problem-solving capacity of the engineering graduate, and there may be opportunities in sales, commissioning, finance, teaching and management, as well as roles managing technology to support a range of organisations.
