Overview
This course gives you the opportunity to study English in combination with another language. The Department of English is home to internationally renowned writers and critics, and there’s a strong research culture, creating a learning environment that is both supportive and intellectually challenging.
Course Information
- The course takes an innovative, modern approach to literature, focusing on drama, prose, fiction and poetry from the 17th century to the present – balancing the traditional with the modern.
- Flexibility is key to our approach and as your course progresses you’ll be able to choose course modules to suit your own particular interests, such as creative writing, film and cultural theory.
- You can choose from French, Spanish, Modern Standard Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese as your modern language.

Year 1
In Year 1 you will study units designed to give you the key skills and ideas needed for the rest of your degree.

- Reading and Writing Mancunia (Literature)
Year 2
In year 2, you will take further English and modern language units.

- Literature, Theory and Culture
- Modern Language
- Writing After the British Empire
Year 3
In year 3, you will have the option to spend a year on placement or studying abroad. In your final year you will undertake a critical project.

Entry Requirements
- Typical offer: 104-112 UCAS tariff points
- IELTS score: 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5, taken within two years of course start date
- UK students:
- Level 3 qualifications: 104-112 UCAS tariff points
- Level 2 qualifications: GCSE grade C/4 in English Language or equivalent
- International students:
- IB Diploma: with minimum 26 points overall or 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects
- IELTS: 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5, taken within two years of course start date
