Overview
This course gives students the opportunity to study English in combination with Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The TESOL modules aim to improve fluency and accuracy in other languages, gaining experience of how to help learners of all abilities to become fluent English speakers.
Course Structure
- The course takes an innovative, modern approach to literature, focusing on drama, prose, fiction, and poetry from the 17th century to the present.
- The TESOL modules are taught by highly qualified and experienced practitioners who have taught across the world, and they bring this experience directly into the classroom.
- As part of the degree, students will have the opportunity to take the internationally recognised Trinity Cert TESOL teaching qualification.

Year 1
- Core modules:
- Framing Narrative: Introduces students to a range of narrative forms from the classical to the contemporary.
- Introduction to TESOL: An introduction to the essential principles of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
- Reading and Writing Mancunia (Literature): Supports students to acquire university-level reading and writing skills and welcomes them into the multicultural creative communities of Manchester.
- Understanding the Learner: Concentrates on the profile of a language learner, with a focus on learners’ backgrounds, variables, motivation, and needs analysis.
Year 2
- Core modules:
- Lesson and Materials Design: Explores English language teaching materials and lesson design, drawing on current research and practical frameworks.
- Literature, Theory and Culture: Encourages students to engage with key theoretical approaches to English studies.
- Teaching Techniques: Focuses on key planning and teaching techniques that can be used in the face-to-face and online classroom.
Year 3
- Core modules:
- Debates in English Language Education: Expands students’ awareness and understanding of the socio-cultural aspects associated with language education.
- Language and Social Justice: Critically examines the role that language plays in the production and maintenance of social in/justices, with a specific focus on global educational contexts.
Study and Assessment
- Study: 25% lectures, seminars, or similar; 75% independent study.
- Assessment: 100% coursework.
Placements
- After the second year, students can choose to progress to their final year or take an optional year out going on placement or studying abroad.
Entry Requirements
- Typical offer: 104-112 UCAS tariff points.
- IELTS score: 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5.
- UK students: GCE A levels - grades BCC or equivalent.
- International students: IB Diploma with minimum 26 points overall or 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects.
