Overview
The BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics (with a modern language) course is designed for students interested in the way language is used to communicate and how it influences people. The course focuses on linguistics and English language, with the opportunity to study a modern language.
Course Information
The course is taught by leading researchers in the field, with real-world linguistic experience. Students will have access to the Language Resource Centre, providing a range of language learning software and study spaces to practise and interact with languages students from across the programme.

Year 1
In Year 1, all students will study units designed to develop a strong basis from which to develop an advanced understanding of English language and linguistics.

Year 2
In Year 2, students will take further TESOL and linguistics units.

Year 3
In Year 3, students will have the option to spend a year on placement or studying abroad. In their final year, students will undertake an Independent Research Project.

Study and Assessment
- Year 1: 25% lectures, seminars or similar; 75% independent study
- Year 2: 25% lectures, seminars or similar; 75% independent study
- Year 3: 25% lectures, seminars or similar; 75% independent study
- Assessment: 100% coursework in all years
Placements
Students will have the opportunity to take an optional year going on placement or studying abroad, in their third year.
Entry Requirements
- Typical offer: 104-112 UCAS tariff points
- IELTS score: 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5
- UK students: 104-112 UCAS tariff points, with a maximum of three A level-equivalent qualifications
- International students: IB Diploma with minimum 26 points overall or 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects

Language Levels
- French: available to beginners and those with previous study of French up to and including A level
- Spanish: available to beginners and those with previous study of Spanish up to and including A level
- Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic: open to students with no background in the language and those with prior learning experience at any level
