Program Overview
MPH Global Public Health
The MPH Global Public Health offers a foundation in public health training and exposure to global health analysis, policies, systems, and practices. This course is designed for health professionals and those interested in developing a career in public health and epidemiology.
Course Overview
Public Health is a growing concern with issues such as obesity and other complex conditions requiring education and specialist training across the health sector. The course focuses on global public health issues guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. These include:
- Reproductive, maternal, new-born, and child health
- Infectious diseases
- Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health
- Injuries and violence
- Universal health coverage (UHC) and health systems
- Environmental risks
- Health risks and disease outbreaks
Course Information
The course is arranged as five core taught modules (180 credits). Students will learn from a breadth of modules, including epidemiology, contemporary issues, and policy, power, and leadership in global public health. The course aims to ensure that all modules explicitly reflect that many public health challenges faced today are global health problems.
- Contemporary issues in global public health: Explore a diverse range of contemporary topics and issues in global public health practice.
- Evidence-based global public health and health promotion: Build foundational knowledge in Global Public Health and Health Promotion.
- Epidemiology & statistics for public health: Develop an understanding of key epidemiological and statistical approaches used within public health.
- Policy, power, and leadership in global public health: Analyze selected global health systems and policies and evaluate their impact on public health outcomes.
- Dissertation: Conduct an independent secondary research project exploring a selected area within global public health.
Study and Assessment
- Full-time: 15% lectures, seminars, or similar; 0% placement; 85% independent study
- Assessment: 84% coursework; 0% practical; 16% examination
Entry Requirements
- UK honours degree – at least a 2:2 (or the international equivalent)
- Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification
- GCSE maths and science at grade A-C, or international equivalent
Fees and Funding
- UK and Channel Island students: Full-time fee £10,250 per year
- EU and non-EU international students: Full-time fee £20,000 per year
- Additional costs: Optional estimate £400 for books, printing, and a laptop
Careers Support and Prospects
The course provides a foundation to develop a wide range of professional careers in public health and epidemiology. Potential careers include health services research, public health analysts, health policy advisors, communicable disease control, or directors of public health. 93.7% of UK-domiciled, full-time, postgraduate taught graduates are employed or in further study 15 months after graduation.
