Introduction to the BSc (Hons) Manchester City Community Football Coaching Program
The BSc (Hons) Manchester City Community Football Coaching program is a unique and innovative course that combines academic expertise with the facilities, experience, and know-how of Manchester City F.C.'s City in the Community Foundation. This three-year course is designed to give students the power to make a real-world impact through sport, by developing a comprehensive skillset in sport coaching, sport development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, and more.
Course Overview
The program is a three-year course that combines theory-based teaching at the Institute of Sport with work-based learning at the state-of-the-art Etihad Campus. The course is designed to help students develop a comprehensive skillset in sport coaching, sport development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, and more. Along the way, students will have the chance to gain additional experiences and to complete a range of professional coaching certificates.

Course Structure
The course is divided into three years, with each year building on the knowledge and skills gained in the previous year.
Year 1
- Fundamentals of Sport Coaching: This module provides an introduction to a number of pedagogical theories relevant to the facilitation of athlete learning, exploring the relationship between the underpinning principles of performance coaching and its application to real-life sporting scenarios.
- Professional Skills for Sport and Exercise: This module aims to develop students' academic and professional skills to facilitate successful progression through Higher Education.
- Exploring Community Sport: This module explores sporting policies and practices in the UK and their direct impact on communities.
- City in the Community Work-Based Learning 1: This module aims to develop real-world coaching skills through work-based learning with Manchester City F.C's City in the Community Foundation.
Year 2
- Investigating Sport Coaching: The aim of this module is to investigate a range of policy and practice issues directly connected to sport coaching.
- Analysing Sport Performance: In this module, students will examine the design and implementation of physical training modalities and systems of analysis in sports performance.
- Advanced Professional Skills for Sport and Exercise: This module aims to advance students' proficiency with academic and professional skills to facilitate continued successful progression through higher education.
- City in the Community Work-Based Learning 2: Run in collaboration with Manchester City F.C. City in the Community Foundation, this module will enable students to develop their career readiness and employability through placement opportunities and professional development tasks and activities.
Year 3
- Contemporary Issues in Sport Coaching: The aim of this module is to examine contemporary issues relating to sports coaching practice.
- Global Sporting Perspectives: This module delves into the multifaceted realm of global sporting perspectives using socio-cultural, historical, and contemporary discourse.
- Individual Project: This module focuses on key skills for research planning and project execution in sport, coaching, exercise, and nutrition, including literature review, methodology, data collection and analysis, interpretation, and discussion.
- City in the Community Work-Based Learning 3: Run in collaboration with Manchester City F.C. City in the Community Foundation, this module will enable students to develop their employability through work-based learning opportunities and career development tasks and activities.
Study and Assessment
- Study: The course is divided into lectures, seminars, or practical-based activity, and independent study.
- Assessment: The course is assessed through coursework, with 100% of the assessment being coursework in each year.
Placements
Practical, work-based learning is a built-in feature of this course, with dedicated modules each year based around community coaching programs delivered by the City in the Community Foundation at the Etihad campus.
Entry Requirements
- Typical offer: 104-112 UCAS tariff points.
- IELTS score: 6.0 with no component below 5.5, taken within two years of course start date.
- UK students: A levels – grades BCC or equivalent, Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma/CTEC Extended Diploma – DMM, Access to HE Diploma - Pass with a minimum 106 UCAS Tariff points.
- International students: IB Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum overall score of 26 or minimum 104 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects, IELTS - 6.0 with no component below 5.5, taken within two years of course start date.
