BA (Hons) Special and Inclusive Education

The BA (Hons) Special and Inclusive Education is a three-year undergraduate program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to create equitable learning pathways and opportunities for diverse learning profiles, including special and additional educational needs.

This program prepares students to be forward-thinking professionals, with a deep understanding of critical and theoretical thinking around neuro-and physical diversity, transdisciplinary approaches, practical strategies, and becoming an effective professional. The course combines core education theory with specialist SEND topics, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of inclusive learning.


Course Structure

The program is divided into three years, with each year building on the previous one to provide a comprehensive education in special and inclusive education.


  • Year 1: Students will engage with ecological, psychological, philosophical, and sociocultural theories of learning and development. They will also explore the distinct subject discipline of special and inclusive education, including policies and frameworks that shape practice and management.
  • Year 2: Students will delve deeper into practical application and professional development of SEND, undertaking their first placement block and gaining hands-on experience in real-world settings.
  • Year 3: Students will continue to build upon previous learning, developing professional skills and understanding research methods to tackle their final case study.

  • Theories of Learning and Development: Students will engage with ecological, psychological, philosophical, and sociocultural theories of learning and development.

  • Policy and Professional Framework: Students will explore the complex landscape of policies and frameworks that shape the practice and management of early years provision, SEND, family support, and education.
  • Sociological Perspectives: Students will explore sociological perspectives in education, childhoods, and inclusion, gaining insights into how society impacts on groups and individuals.

  • IELTS 6.0 with no component below 5.5
