MSc Specialist Community Practice (Top-up)
The MSc Specialist Community Practice (Top-up) is designed for students who have successfully completed either the PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nursing apprenticeship (school nursing or health visiting) or the Specialist Community Nursing (District Nursing) apprenticeship. This course aims to help students develop a valid research question and proposal, synthesise relevant scientific literature, and critically evaluate appropriate study methods and results within the context of current evidence.
Course Overview
This course will provide students with the opportunity to design and conduct a significant research study on a topic of their choosing. The course will enhance existing research skills through a conceptual and empirical study with the support of an academic supervisor. The teaching of ethics in scientific research methodologies and statistical analyses will be emphasised, while supporting the development of scientific writing and critical appraisal skills.

Core Modules
Dissertation with Research Methods
This module will guide students on how to research issues of professional interest and relevance through the use of appropriate research strategies and deepen their knowledge and understanding around emerging issues.
Study and Assessment
Study
- Part-time: 30% lectures, seminars or similar; 50% placement; 20% independent study
Assessment
- Part-time: 84% coursework; 0% practical; 16% examination
Entry Requirements
- Already an NMC registered Level 1 Nurse and/or Midwife.
- Already an NMC registered Specialist Practitioner in District Nursing or Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN).
- Have completed the PgDip Community Nursing (District Nursing) or Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Apprenticeship at Manchester Met since Sept 2021 and gained 120 credits at level 7.
Fees and Funding
UK and Channel Island Students
- Part-time fee: £1709 per 30 credits studied.
EU and Non-EU International Students
- Part-time fee: £3334 per 30 credits studied.

Additional Information
- A masters qualification typically comprises 180 credits, a PGDip 120 credits, a PGCert 60 credits, and an MFA 300 credits.
- Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of study provided the course is completed in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study).
