On our MSc/PgDip Sport Nutrition course, you’ll examine the evidence surrounding nutrition, performance and health, and gain the nutritional and physiological skills needed to work in the rewarding field of sport and exercise nutrition.

Course Overview
You’ll study the theory of nutrition, physiology and sports performance. Topics range from the applied effects of manipulating macronutrients to evaluating the role of fuelling before and during exercise, recovery and body composition manipulation.

Year 1
During your course you’ll study core modules, covering areas including innovations in technology and fundamentals of programming, as well as an in-depth consultancy-based dissertation.
Core Modules
- Dissertation with Research Methods: Design and undertake a significant scientific research study on a topic of professional interest and relevance in your specialist study area.
- Exercise Physiology: Cover the physiological responses and adaptations of the body that occur with exercise training and performance.
- Fundamental Nutrition: Explore nutritional needs through the life course, presenting the principles of nutrition and discussing food composition, dietary requirements and the acute and chronic life course consequences of imbalanced nutrient intake.
- Laboratory Techniques in Sport and Exercise Nutrition: Gain an in-depth knowledge into laboratory techniques used in sports and exercise nutrition, research and practice.
- Nutritional Assessment: Deliver core knowledge and skills to enable you to assess and analyse an individual’s nutritional status using dietary intake and body composition assessment.
- Practical Nutrition for Athletes: Provide the skills, knowledge and practical experience required for a practising nutritionist to work in the field of sport and exercise nutrition.
- Public Health Nutrition: Examine the theory, methods and applications of public health, nutrition and promotion in the context of changing individual and population behaviours for the improvement of society’s health.
- Research Trends in Performance Nutrition: Evaluate current trends and emerging developments in sports nutrition, focusing upon the evidence-based application, policies and practices within the field of performance nutrition.
- Sport and Exercise Nutrition: Cover the key concepts in sport and exercise nutrition, with specific focus on macronutrient and micronutrient intakes, ergogenic aids and nutritional periodisation for performance.
Study and Assessment
- Study: 30% lectures, seminars or similar; 0% placement; 70% independent study
- Assessment: 100% coursework; 0% practical; 0% examination
Entry Requirements
- A minimum 2:2 UK undergraduate honours degree, or equivalent, in nutrition, dietetics, physiology or sports science with a strong biological sciences component or a related subject.
- Overseas applicants will require IELTS with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in any category, or an equivalent accepted English qualification.
Fees and Funding
- UK and Channel Island students: Full-time fee £10,250 per year
- EU and non-EU international students: Full-time fee £20,000 per year
- Additional costs: Optional estimate £400 for books, printing, and laptop.
