Overview

The Architecture/Architecture (International) (RIBA Part 1) BA(Hons) degree course is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Upon graduation, students gain exemption from RIBA's Part 1 Professional Examinations. The course works alongside the suite of built environment courses to help students develop a strong understanding of professionalism within the construction industry.


Course Details

  • The course has two strands: Architecture and Architecture International.
  • In the final year, students can opt for a Home or International Design Studio, offering a distinctive approach to the subject.
  • The course covers the environmental and social nature of architecture, allowing students to experience diverse ideas and influences.
  • Students learn in the state-of-the-art, £30-million Barbara Hepworth Building, with access to 3D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality, and motion tracking sensors.

Course Structure

  • Year 1: Core modules include Technology 1, History and Theory 1, Personal Development 1, Design Studio 1, and Design Studio 2.
  • Year 2: Core modules include Technology 2, History and Theory 2, Personal Development 2, Design Studio 3, and Design Studio 4.
  • Year 3: Core modules include Technology 3, History and Theory 3, Personal Development 3, Design Studio 5, and either Design Studio 6: Culture Context Place or Design Studio 6: Culture Context Place (International).

Teaching and Assessment

  • The course is delivered using a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops, and design studio projects.
  • Studio-based design is central to the course, with access to high-quality resources in computing and modeling, professional support, and tuition.
  • Students are assessed on a combination of portfolios of design work, written assignments, seminar presentations, and classroom tests, individually and in groups.

Placements

  • If intending to follow the route to become a qualified architect, upon successful completion of the degree, students undertake a year working in professional practice before continuing to RIBA Part 2.
  • The University has excellent links with architectural practices around the world, and students have found employment in a wide range of practices.

Facilities

  • Dedicated to exploration, students have the opportunity to cultivate, curate, and showcase in innovative spaces, utilizing extensive and purpose-built facilities.
  • Facilities include 3D printers for rapid prototyping and modeling, laser cutters, virtual reality cave, print and dye capabilities, photography studios, digital print center, and specialist film studios.

Fees and Finance

  • The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students.
  • Inspirational field trips to destinations of educational and cultural significance are a component of the course and will be funded by the University.
  • For the international route of the course in the final year, an extended overseas field study trip is a compulsory component, and the cost will be covered by the student.
