Overview of the Computing with Foundation Year BSc(Hons) Program
The Computing with Foundation Year BSc(Hons) program is designed for students who possess the capability to pursue a degree but do not have the pre-requisite qualifications to directly apply to their desired course. The duration of the foundation element is one year, and if students successfully pass, they will automatically progress on to the degree.

- Course Structure: The course covers a range of topics in both the disciplines of computing and Information Systems, from software engineering to cyber security, and web development.
Core Modules
The course includes a variety of core modules, such as:
- Communication and Research: Exploring the importance of communication in computing and engineering.
- Foundation Mathematics: Practicing the necessary mathematical tools and principles required for first-year studies.
- Foundations of Computer Science: Considering some of the main areas of study within computing and information technology.
- Computational Thinking: Introducing the theoretical foundation of computational thinking through a collection of problems with incrementally challenging complexity.
Optional Modules
Students can choose from a list of optional modules, including:
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence: Exploring whether machines can be intelligent and what that means precisely.
- Web Development: Building on the Foundation level Introduction to Web Programming module, focusing on backend (server-side) web development.
- User Experience Design: Providing the skills necessary for designing, prototyping, and evaluating usable user interfaces.
Placements
This course offers an optional one-year work placement after Year 2, which helps students build on the knowledge and skills developed on the course. The placement year is a valuable tool that can enhance employability and help students develop as individuals.
Fees and Finance
- Tuition Fees: The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students.
- Additional Costs: Optional field trips may be offered to destinations in the UK, which students would need to pay for if they choose to attend.
