Overview

Electronic and electrical engineering is behind the technologies that have driven the global economy for decades, and society needs electronic and electrical engineers of the future to be innovative and adventurous. This course provides students with the skills to convert theory into practice, enabling them to become innovators of the future. Electronic and electrical engineering doesn't just lead to a career; it's a gateway to improved prospects, increased earning potential, and the ability to shape one's own path in this crucial industry.

Why Study Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng(Hons) at Huddersfield?

The University of Huddersfield aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in this fast-paced sector. The top five job titles advertised in the UK for graduate roles associated with Electronic and Electrical Engineering are Test Engineers, Power Electronics Engineers, Shift Engineers, Lead Electrical Engineers, and Electrical Test Engineers. The course explores the principal aspects of electronic and electrical engineering, investigating areas such as sustainable power generation, integrated electronic and electrical systems, and performance and electronic control of electric machines.

Course Structure

  • Year 1: Core modules include Engineering Communication and Materials, Mathematics, Manufacturing, Measurement and Diagnostics, Engineering Science, Mechatronics, and Professional Development and Transferrable Skills.
  • Year 2: Core modules include Enterprise: Electronic Product Design and Manufacture, Signal Analysis and Control, Embedded Systems, Electronics 2, Electrical Principles 2, and Electrical Power and Machines.
  • Year 3 – Optional Placement Year: Students have the opportunity to undertake an industry work placement.
  • Final Year: Core modules include Final Year Project, Control Systems, Digital System Integration, and Electrical Power and Drive Systems. Option modules may include Analogue System Integration and Project Quality and Production Management.

Teaching and Assessment

A variety of assessment strategies are used, including reports or logbooks on laboratory work, presentations, and formal examinations. Feedback is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term-time weeks.

Placements

Students have the chance to undertake an optional placement in Year 3. A placement helps students build on the knowledge and skills developed on the course. Previous students from this subject area have spent their placement year at companies including Cummins, Eaton, Northern Trains Ltd, and Intel.

Accreditations and Professional Links

This course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and fully meets the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and partly meets the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Career Support

The University of Huddersfield provides career support, including industry-supported workshops, careers fairs, and one-to-one guidance sessions. Many graduates from this course have gone on to work in roles such as Electronic Engineer, Systems Engineer, Control Systems and Instrumentation Design Engineer, and Application Design Engineer.

Fees and Finance

The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students. Students doing IET-accredited courses can apply for scholarships and grants.
