Program Overview
Overview
The Fashion Design with Textiles BA(Hons) course focuses on contemporary fashion design with an emphasis on designing and making the textiles used in those designs. Students will be taught garment manufacturing suitable for womenswear, menswear, or gender-neutral collections. As well as studying fashion design, students will learn to design and create textiles, by decorating surfaces, manipulating fabrics, and constructing their own knitwear.

The course duration is 3 years full-time or 4 years including a placement year.
Course Detail
The course is divided into four years:
- Year 1: Core modules include Materials Processes and Practices, Design and Realisation, Sustainable Principles, Fashion Design Practice, and Textile Practices.
- Year 2: Core modules include Fashion Design through Creative Cut, Brand Me, Sustainable Practices, Tailoring, and Textiles for the Body.
- Year 3 (optional placement year): Students will normally spend a total of 48 weeks (36 weeks minimum) in a managed work experience.
- Final Year: Core modules include Advanced Fashion Design Practice, Major Project, Research and Context, and Professional Practice.
Teaching and Assessment
Teaching methods include studio-based design projects, workshop demonstrations, and lectures. Assessment will include assignments, practical presentations, and a final year dissertation.
Placements
The course offers an optional one-year work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad. Students have previously taken up placement opportunities with companies including Alexander McQueen, Mary Katrantzou, Faustine Steinmetz, Private White VC, Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, LK Bennett, Matthew Williamson, Preen, Boohoo, and Christopher Kane (Paris).
Facilities
The University of Huddersfield has a range of facilities, including 3D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality cave, print and dye capabilities, photography studios, digital print centre, and specialist film studios.
Fees and Finance
The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students. Additional costs include materials, with basic materials provided during the first and second years of the course. Students will need to supply some of their own materials, including sewing equipment, art materials, and printing.
Career Support

The course aims to help students develop the skills needed to go on to work in design, styling, merchandising, buying, selection, management, marketing, and promotion.

Students who graduate from this course can apply for the professional qualification, Associateship and Chartered Membership of the Textile Institute, after a shorter period of work experience than is usually required, or in some cases directly on graduation.
