Forensic and Analytical Science with Industrial Experience MSci

Overview

The Forensic and Analytical Science with Industrial Experience MSci course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of forensic science and analytical science. This dual subject course covers the tools and processes used in real-life forensic investigations, as well as the basics of forensic chemistry. The course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences and includes a placement year in an industry setting.


Course Structure

The course is structured over four years, with the third year spent in industry. The first year covers a range of modules, including:


  • Important Forensic Concepts
  • Introduction to Analytical Science and Spectroscopy
  • Structure: From Atoms to Molecules and Materials
  • The Reactivity and Properties of Carbon Compounds
  • States of Matter, Kinetics and Thermodynamics

The second year builds on the first year, with modules such as:


  • Crime Scene and Forensic Examinations
  • Forensic Biology Awareness
  • Practical Forensic Science 2
  • Molecular Analysis & Instrumental Methods
  • Methods and Strategies in Organic Synthesis

The third year is spent in industry, where students will undertake a placement in an industrial laboratory. The final year includes advanced topics in forensic and analytical science, as well as a substantial research project.


Teaching and Assessment

The course is taught through a series of lectures, tutorials, and practicals/workshops. Assessment includes written exams, problem-solving exercises, assessment of laboratory skills, multiple-choice questions, oral and poster presentations, and written reports.


Career Opportunities

Graduates of this course may consider careers in crime scene investigation, forensic pathology, toxicology, clothing damage analysis, bloodstain pattern analysis, forensic technology, or forensic anthropology. Previous graduates have gone on to work in roles such as Analytical Scientist, Offshore Chemist, Scientist, and Analytical Scientist.


Fees and Finance

The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students. Optional short field trips may incur additional costs, ranging from £10 to £100 per student.
