Program Overview
Games Development (Art) BA(Hons)
The Games Development (Art) BA(Hons) course is designed for students who see themselves as artists or have a passion for creating the visual elements of a game. This degree focuses on the artistic aspects of game development, including character and environment art, level design, and prototyping with game engines.
Overview
The course explores what is possible with games art and development, and creative production. Students will learn about conceptualisation, character and environment art, level design, and prototyping with game engines. The programme aims to develop students' understanding of game concepts, rules, and mechanics through evaluation and critique of traditional and computer games.
Course Structure
- The course is divided into four years, with an optional placement year in Year 3.
- Year 1: Core modules include Concept Development 1, Games Team Project 1, 3D Games Asset Development, Your Game Development Journey, and Games Prototyping 1.
- Year 2: Core modules include Games Design and Development 2, Team Project (Games), 3D Environment and Hard Surface Production, Visual Design for Games, and 3D Digital Sculpture and Character Creation.
- Year 3 (optional placement year): Students can undertake an optional one-year work placement to gain industry experience.
- Final year: Core modules include Individual Project, Team Project (Games), Advanced Visual Design for Games, and Advanced 3D (Design and Production).
Teaching and Assessment
- The course is taught through a series of lectures, tutorials, studio-based teaching, and practical sessions.
- Assessment is varied and includes coursework, presentations, and demonstrations, as well as formal examinations.
- Feedback is provided on all coursework submissions within three term-time weeks.
Career Opportunities
- Graduates from this course have gone on to work in a variety of roles, including Technical Content Artist, Functional Tester, Lead Environment Artist, Senior Test Specialist, and Senior Producer.
- The course is industry-recognised by ScreenSkills, the industry-led skills body for the UK's screen-based industries.
Fees and Finance
- The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students.
- Tuition fees will cover the cost of study at the University, as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision, and examinations.
