Overview

The Information Systems Management MSc at the University of Huddersfield is designed for graduates in computing, business computing, information systems, and related disciplines. Entry Requirements

  • An Honours degree (2:2 or above) in business computing/IS/ICT-related subject or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • Other qualifications and/or experience that demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at an Honours degree level.
  • Substantial (5+ years) relevant industry experience in a management role.
  • If the first language is not English, a minimum English Language qualification of IELTS 6.0 overall with no element lower than 5.5, or equivalent.

  • Effective Research and Professional Practice: This module provides skills key to becoming a successful computing researcher or practitioner, covering topics such as the nature of research, the scientific method, research methods, and literature review.
  • Big Data Analytics: This module covers the knowledge and critical understanding of contemporary challenges posed by big data, including fundamental characteristics, operations, existing and emerging architectures, and domain applications.
  • Machine Learning: This module allows students to obtain a fundamental understanding of machine learning, including how to embody machines with the ability to learn, recognize, classify, decide, plan, revise, optimize, etc.
  • Change and Project Management: This module covers planning for different types of change and focuses on both human and organizational impacts, incorporating management theory and concepts within working practice.
  • Data Mining: This module explores different data mining techniques and uses appropriate data-mining tools to evaluate the quality of discovered knowledge, studying approaches to preparing data for exploration and supervised and unsupervised approaches to data mining.
  • Software Development: This module brings together database, object-oriented semantics, and web authoring skills using an appropriate set of development tools to construct distinct software artifacts.
  • Databases for Large Data-sets: This module introduces alternative approaches to modeling the data needs of an organization, focusing on non-relational data models and providing the opportunity to use non-relational databases and database technologies.
  • Semantic Web: This module covers basic languages for describing ontologies and languages and tools for processing and querying them, providing hands-on experience in using semantic web technologies.
  • Individual Project: This module enables students to work independently on a project related to a self-selected problem, with the option to undertake an in-company project with an external client.

Teaching and Assessment

The course will mainly focus on a flipped learning approach supported by a variety of learning activities, including lectures, seminars, and practice-led, self-directed, and experiential learning.
