Program Overview


Overview

The Interior Design BA(Hons) course at the University of Huddersfield aims to help students develop the skills needed to become professional interior designers. Through a supportive learning journey, students are encouraged to imagine what is possible and develop their own designs, with an emphasis on creativity.


Course Details

  • The course is three years full-time or four years including a placement year.
  • Students learn in the £30-million Barbara Hepworth Building, which provides facilities such as 3D printers for rapid prototyping, laser cutters, special software, studios, and more.
  • The course offers an optional one-year work placement after the second year, in the UK or abroad, giving students the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience and build their portfolio to boost their employment prospects.

Course Structure

  • Year 1: Core modules include Design Process and Communication, Design Theory Fundamentals, and Design Exploration.
  • Year 2: Core modules include Design in Context, Design Identities, and Design Realisation.
  • Year 3 (optional placement year): The placement year is an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and build on the skills they have developed in their first two years of study.
  • Final Year: Core modules include Research Proposal, Professional Practice, and Major Project - Interior Design.

Teaching and Assessment

  • Students learn through participation in studio-based design projects, workshop demonstrations, lectures, seminars, group and individual tutorials.
  • Progress is monitored by presentation of a portfolio of design work, written assignments, and oral presentations, both individually and in groups.

Career Opportunities

  • The course aims to help students develop the skills needed to work within interior architecture and design firms as well as focused retail, workplace, leisure, and hotel design companies around the world.
  • Recent graduates have gone on to work at companies such as Adam & Eve (London), Google (USA), and Studio Tilt (Netherlands).

Fees and Finance

  • The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students.
  • Students will need to supply their own materials during the course, with approximate costs of £50-70 in year one, £50-70 in year two, and £250 in the final year.
