Program Overview
Overview
The Lifelong Learning CertEd in-service course is designed for individuals who are already working as teachers or trainers in the education and training sector. The course aims to help students progress their careers and gain the knowledge and understanding needed to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
Key Information
Entry Requirements
- Students should normally be in employment as a teacher or trainer at a recognised training or educational establishment for a minimum of 250 hours.
- Students should have qualifications at Level 3 or above, for example HNC, CGLI Advanced, NVQ level 3/4 or other recognised professional qualification.
- Students should have Level 2 Maths and English.
- Students should have the ability to demonstrate appropriate work experience in the area they wish to teach.
- Students must also provide confirmation of an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, one satisfactory reference, and complete a satisfactory interview.
- Students must identify a work-based mentor who can support them in their subject specialism.

- The course is 2 years part-time.
Course Detail
Modules
- Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment: This module aims to develop students' understanding of how people learn in the Lifelong Learning Sector and of the role of assessment in enabling learning and achievement.
- Becoming a Subject Specialist Teacher: The module reviews students' practice as a trainee teacher, exploring their teaching values, knowledge of their subject specialism, and their knowledge and understanding of how they're learning to teach.
- Being a Subject Specialist Teacher: This module builds on previous generic and subject specialist development, contributing to students' development of more advanced strategies and methods for promoting learning.
- Option modules:
- Curriculum and Context: This module will develop students' understanding of policy and issues relating to curriculum development in lifelong learning.
- English as an Additional Language (EAL): Curriculum and Context: This module will develop students' understanding of provision for learners with English as an additional language (EAL) in the lifelong learning sector.
- SEND: Curriculum and Context: This module will develop students' understanding of special educational provision in the lifelong learning sector and disability equality in the lifelong learning curriculum.
- EDI and Social Justice: Curriculum and Context: This module explores the ways in which lifelong learning can address inequity and disadvantage.
Career Opportunities
This course seeks to prepare students for a professional teaching role in the Lifelong Learning sector, which could include working as a lecturer in a college of further education. Former trainees have also successfully progressed into a wide range of training and teaching roles within adult education and in private training organisations.
Fees and Finance
- The part-time tuition fee for this course for 2025/26 entry will be £4,767.50.
- Students studying on most undergraduate part-time courses take 90 credits per year.

Accreditations and Professional Links
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to proceed, following a process of professional formation through the Society for Education and Training to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. This is the full professional status for teachers in the Lifelong Learning sector.

The University may occasionally have to make changes to courses, including discontinuing or suspending courses, and will notify students as soon as possible if this is the case. The University will provide reasonable support to assist students with transferring to another university if they wish to do so and may be eligible for an exit award depending on how far through the course they are.
