Overview

The Lifelong Learning PGCE in-service course at the University of Huddersfield is designed for individuals who are already working as teachers or trainers in the education and training sector. The course aims to develop the skills and knowledge needed to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector and to prepare students for playing a full part in teaching, administrative, and curriculum development activities in colleges and other education and training organizations.

• Entry Requirements: Students should normally be in employment as a teacher or trainer at a recognized training or educational establishment for a minimum of 250 hours (at least 125 hours in any one year). They should also have a UK first degree (normally 2:2 or above) or equivalent related to their specialist area, at least a Level 3 or equivalent related to their specialist area, Level 2 Maths and English, and relevant work experience in some specialist subject areas.
• Admission Criteria: In addition to the entry requirements, students must provide confirmation of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, one satisfactory reference, complete a satisfactory interview, and identify a work-based mentor who can support them in their subject specialism.
• Tuition Fees: The part-time tuition fee for this course for 2024/25 entry is £4,767.50.

Course Detail

The course is available at the University of Huddersfield and through The Education and Training Consortium at approximately 21 centers. It is a 2-year part-time course, with a focus on practical teaching. Students will have the opportunity to gain experience of learning and teaching alongside other professionals with support from tutors and work-based mentors.

Core Modules

• Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment: This module aims to develop students' understanding of how people learn in the Lifelong Learning Sector and of the role of assessment in enabling learning and achievement.
• Becoming a Subject Specialist Teacher: The module reviews students' practice as trainee teachers, exploring their teaching values, knowledge of their subject specialism, and their knowledge and understanding of how they are learning to teach.
• Being a Subject Specialist Teacher: This module builds on previous generic and subject specialist development, contributing to students' development of more advanced strategies and methods for promoting learning and involving a focus on specific specialist areas and the critical analysis of subject specialist pedagogy.

Option Modules

• Curriculum and Context: This module will develop students' critical understanding of policy and issues relating to curriculum development in lifelong learning.
• English as an Additional Language (EAL): Curriculum and Context: This module will develop students' critical understanding of EAL provision in the lifelong learning sector.
• SEND: Curriculum and Context: This module will develop students' understanding of special educational provision in the lifelong learning sector and disability equality in the lifelong learning curriculum.
• EDI and Social Justice: Curriculum and Context: This module explores the ways in which lifelong learning can address inequity and disadvantage.

Career Opportunities

Previous graduates from courses in this subject area have gone on to work in a variety of roles such as Further Education Teacher, Community Education Officer, Learning Mentor, Education Consultant, Family Support Worker, and Education Mental Health Practitioner.

Accreditations and Professional Links

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to proceed, following a process of professional formation through the Society for Education and Training, to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. This is the full professional status for teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
