Program Overview
Overview of the Mechanical Engineering BEng(Hons) Course
The Mechanical Engineering BEng(Hons) course at the University of Huddersfield is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of mechanics, dynamics, heat transfer, and fluid flow, along with design, manufacturing, and business considerations. The course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in a wide range of industries.
Course Structure
The course is structured over three years, with an optional placement year available after the second year. The first and second years are part of the EnABLE (Engineering in an Activity-Based Learning Environment) program, which provides students with the opportunity to work on projects and develop their technical knowledge and skills.
Year 1
- Core modules:
- Engineering Computational Skills
- Professional Skills and Research Awareness
- Engineering Science
- Electronic System Fundamentals
- Engineering Design, Manufacture and Test
- Materials and Mechanics
Year 2
- Core modules:
- Dynamic Systems
- Analysis of Materials
- Engineering Design
- Thermofluids
- Electrical Energy Conversion
- Manufacturing and Production Systems
Year 3 (Optional Placement Year)
- Students have the opportunity to undertake an optional placement year, which provides valuable work experience and can enhance employability.
Final Year
- Core modules:
- Dynamic Analysis and Control
- Design Analysis
- Eco Design and IPR
- Final Year Project
- Option modules:
- Project Quality and Production Management
- Aerodynamics and Computational Fluid Dynamics
Teaching and Assessment
The course uses a variety of assessment strategies, including exams, in-class tests, reports on laboratory experiments, laboratory-based assignments, and projects. Feedback is provided on all coursework submissions, and students have the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge through weekly SAIL (Score as I Learn) assignments.
Accreditations and Professional Links
The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and fully meets the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and partly meets the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Career Opportunities
Graduates from the course have gone on to work in a variety of roles, including Supplier Quality Manager, Vehicle Engineering, Design Engineer, Lead Engineer, and Chassis Engineer, in organizations such as McLaren Automotive Ltd, Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd, Rolls-Royce, Cummins Inc, and Bentley Motors Ltd.
Fees and Finance
The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students. Tuition fees will cover the cost of study at the University, as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision, and examinations.
Research Excellence
The University of Huddersfield has a strong research environment, with expertise in areas such as precision engineering, intelligent interfaces, systems engineering, and diagnostics. The Centre for Precision Technologies is widely regarded as one of the best research facilities of its type in the UK and Europe.
Student Support
The University provides a range of support services, including careers and employability support, student finance, and academic support. Students also have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including engineering laboratories and design studios.
