Overview of Mechatronic Engineering with Foundation Year BEng(Hons)

The Mechatronic Engineering with Foundation Year BEng(Hons) program is designed for students who possess the capability to pursue a degree but do not have the pre-requisite qualifications to directly apply to their desired course. This integrated foundation degree leads onto the accredited BEng(Hons) and provides students with the opportunity to explore key areas of Electronic and Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering.

Course Details

Overview

The course combines mechanical skills, smart electronics, and robotics with control systems to address a range of complex engineering projects, focusing on sustainability. It grounds students in the key principles and practices of several disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, electronic, control, and computer systems.

Course Structure

  • Foundation Year: Modules include Communication and Research, Engineering Investigative Studies, Foundation Mathematics, and Foundations of Engineering.
  • Year 2: Modules include Engineering Computational Skills, Professional Skills and Research Awareness, Engineering Science, Electronic System Fundamentals, and Engineering Design, Manufacture and Test.
  • Year 3: Modules include Analysis of Materials, Signal Analysis and Control, Engineering Design, Thermofluids, Electrical Energy Conversion, and Manufacturing and Production Systems.
  • Year 4 (Optional Placement Year): Students have the chance to undertake an optional placement.
  • Final Year: Modules include Dynamic Analysis and Control, Project Quality and Production Management, Electrical Power and Drive Systems, Digital Signal Processing Applications, and Final Year Project.

Placements

A placement year helps students build on the knowledge and skills developed on the course. The Placement team supports students in finding suitable placement opportunities.


Fees and Finance

  • The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students.
  • Tuition fees cover the cost of study at the University, including registration, tuition, supervision, and examinations.
