Introduction to Midwifery Studies BSc(Hons)

The Midwifery Studies BSc(Hons) degree is designed for individuals passionate about delivering the best and safest care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatally. This program focuses on providing individualized care for the mother and baby throughout pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the early days of parenthood.


Overview of the Course

  • It is a three-year full-time program.

  • The program is regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and has UNICEF UK Baby Friendly accreditation.

Entry Requirements

  • A Level: ABB, including a Biological Science, but excluding General Studies.
  • BTEC: DDM in BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/Subsidiary Diploma/National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care or a Level 3 Applied Diploma in Medical Science at a minimum Grade B.
  • GCSE: English Language or Literature and Maths at grade 4 or above, or grade C or above if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme.
  • Other qualifications, such as NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, Access to Higher Education Diploma, and International Baccalaureate qualifications, are also accepted.
  • Relevant work experience and the ability to demonstrate a broad understanding of the role of the midwife and midwifery practice are required.
  • Offers are subject to an interview.

The course is divided into three years, each with core modules that cover various aspects of midwifery practice, including:


Year 1

  • Biology for Midwifery Practice
  • Introduction to Evidence-Informed Enquiry in Midwifery
  • Introducing Newborn and Family Health
  • Introducing Universal Midwifery Care for all Women
  • Participating in Midwifery Care

Year 2

  • Challenges to Newborn and Family Health
  • Contributing to Midwifery Practice
  • Evidence Based Midwifery Practice
  • Supporting Women with Additional Care Needs

Year 3

  • Advocacy and Leadership in Midwifery Practice
  • Care and Systematic Assessment of the Newborn
  • Midwifery Research Project
  • Proficiency in Midwifery Practice

Placements

  • Students spend between 24 and 27 weeks each year undertaking compulsory clinical practice.
  • Placements are available in various settings, including midwife-led units, birth centers, labor suites, antenatal/postnatal wards, community midwifery, neonatal care, and surgical experience.
  • Students may be required to travel for placements across West Yorkshire and occasionally beyond.

Fees and Finance

  • The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students.
  • Students studying this course may be eligible to receive a non-repayable grant of at least £5,000 each year.
