Program Overview


Overview

The Music Performance MMus course is designed to enable students to pursue music performance at an advanced level, allowing them to specialize in particular areas and genres of music performance as well as develop their skills as a rounded and expert performer. Students will work to gain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the repertoire they perform, develop their intellectual and creative skills required for a high level of performance, and apply research skills with a view to making an original contribution to the professional context of music performance.

Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of a 2:2 honors degree from a recognized University or equivalent institution.
  • Application materials (or previous qualifications) and live audition (or documentation of performance) should demonstrate a strong understanding of performance and instrumental/vocal/other technique.
  • Auditions should comprise two contrasting pieces, one of which should relate to the proposed specialism in performance.
  • If the first language is not English, students will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification, with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall and no element lower than 6.0.

Course Detail

Core Modules

  • Researching Music: Introduction to significant and contemporary scholarship relating to the study of music, including music production, composition, and sonic arts.
  • Performance 1: Exploration and performance of a range of repertoire and skills appropriate to the instrument/voice or specialist route.
  • Performance in Context: Examination of recent and current scholarship relating to music performance and performance studies.
  • Performance 2: Development of performance skills, focusing on repertoire appropriate to the specialism, with three recitals, the final one representing the culmination of research and development as a performer.

Teaching and Assessment

  • Teaching takes various forms, including individual tuition, performance workshops, seminars, and tutorials.
  • Students receive 26 hours of individual tuition from expert instrumental/vocal tutors.
  • Assessments include a combination of written work, review of literature, and methods appropriate to performance and the specialism.

Fees and Finance

Tuition Fees - Full-time

  • In 2025/26, the full-time tuition fee for UK postgraduate students will be £9,900 (Band 3).

Tuition Fees - Part-time

  • In 2024/25, the part-time tuition fee for UK postgraduate students will be £740 (Band 3) per 15 credit module and £1,480 (Band 3) per 30 credit module.
