Program Overview
Overview
The Paramedic Practice (Top-up) (Distance Learning) BSc(Hons) course provides the opportunity for qualified paramedics to undertake a top-up degree through distance learning. It allows students to use their professional qualification and registration to APEL the first year of a degree programme. Students will be required to undertake exercises where they will engage with the online materials in order to develop an understanding of advanced paramedic theories, as well as explore how these can impact on patient care.

Entry Requirements
- Students must be a registered Paramedic, hold current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and be currently working within a critical care environment.
- If the first language is not English, students will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification. The minimum for IELTS is 7.0 overall with no element lower than 6.5, or equivalent.
- Students must also have access to a computer with a reliable internet connection and the ability to access and use online study guidance and support as this course is delivered through distance learning.

Year 1
- Developing an Understanding of Research Processes and Methods (Distance Learning): This module provides students with the opportunity to evaluate and critically appraise published healthcare research, as well as develop an understanding of different designs, methods and approaches to research.
- Advancing Paramedic Practice (Distance Learning): This module provides the opportunity to advance existing knowledge of patient care by exploring and analysing evidence-based practice and current research, through detailed reviews of scenario-based exercises.
- Research-Based Project (Distance Learning): Students will examine an area of current practice under the supervision of a member of academic staff and submit a research-based project which demonstrates an appreciation of the area of practice and research processes.
- Leadership and Management in Health Professional Practice (Distance Learning): This module provides the opportunity to develop understanding of leadership and management in healthcare practice.
Teaching and Assessment
- Teaching on this course is delivered through lectures, group work, seminars, tutorials, online learning logs, and distance learning.
- A variety of assessment methods will be utilised including negotiated learning contracts, reports, essays, research critiques, and a project.
Technology and System Requirements
- Students must provide and have access to the following IT equipment and facilities to access the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and to fully participate on the course:
- Personal computer
- Internet connection with sufficient bandwidth to allow video streaming (4Mps minimum)
- Microphone and webcam
- The course can be accessed using the latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Microsoft Edge.
- Minimum specifications for personal computers and webcams are provided.
Fees and Finance
Tuition Fees - part-time
- The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £1,589 per 20 credit module and £2,384 per 30 credit module per year for part-time students (subject to parliamentary approval).
- Tuition fees will cover the cost of study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision, and examinations.

- This course will assist students to meet the specialist skills and post-registration development requirements stipulated by their employer/professional regulator.
- The modules have been developed with the aim to assist the career enhancement of paramedics, as they provide the opportunity to develop an understanding of and implement advanced paramedic theories.
