Program Overview
Overview of the Physiotherapy BSc(Hons) Program
The Physiotherapy BSc(Hons) program at the University of Huddersfield is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful physiotherapist. This course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council.
Program Details
- Duration: 3 years full-time
- Start Date: 22 September 2025
- Entry Requirements:
- A Level: ABB, including a relevant science subject (Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or PE), excluding General Studies and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
- BTEC: DDM in a relevant science subject (not Sport or Health and Social Care), with at least 40% externally examined assessment
- Access to Higher Education Diploma: with at least 45 level 3 credits at Merit or above, 30 of which must be passed at Distinction and must include 15 in a relevant science
- International Baccalaureate: 128 UCAS tariff points, including a relevant science at Higher Level at grade 6
- GCSE Requirements: English Language or Literature and Maths at grade 4 or above, or grade C if awarded under the previous GCSE grading scheme, or equivalent Ofqual regulated qualification
- Additional Requirements:
- Evidence of level 3 study (or higher) within the last four years
- Understanding of the physiotherapy profession
- Satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and occupational health clearances prior to registration
- Overseas Police Check if you have lived in a country outside of the UK for 6 months or more (whether continuously or in total) in the last 10 years before applying
Course Structure
The program is divided into three years, with core modules in each year focusing on different aspects of physiotherapy practice, research, and professional development.
Year 1
- Professional Development and Research 1: Introduction to research and evidence-based practice, exploring different research methodologies and the concept of ethics within healthcare research
- Human Structure and Function: Foundational knowledge relating to anatomy and physiology, fundamental to the practice of physiotherapy
- Foundations of Physiotherapy Practice: Fundamental skills in assessment and treatment used across all areas of physiotherapy practice
- Health Promotion and Exercise Therapy: Role of the Physiotherapist in promoting health, preventing illness, and the use and prescription of therapeutic exercise
- Impact of Pathology: Introduction to key pathologies and their impact from an individual to a societal level, including a block of practice-based learning (PBL 1)
Year 2
- Research 2: Building on knowledge of research from Year 1, preparing students to undertake an area of research in Year 3
- Acute Care: Physiotherapy assessment and management skills required to effectively treat patients in an acute setting
- Outpatient and Community Care: Assessment and management of patients with a range of problems commonly seen in outpatient and community settings
- Clinical Rehabilitation: Principles and practices essential for delivering current physiotherapeutic rehabilitation modalities
- Practiced-Based Learning (PBL) 2, 3 & 4: Blocks of practice-based learning to gain experience in the workplace under the supervision of a clinical educator
Year 3
- Research 3: Undertaking a small-scale research project related to an interdisciplinary research environment
- Enhancing Physiotherapy Practice: Incorporating the principles of enhancing physiotherapy practice, taking an integrated and person-centered approach
- Enterprise, Employability and Leadership: Understanding how health and social care is influenced, shaped, and provided in the UK, and preparing for future employment and career progression
- Practice-Based Learning (PBL) 5, 6 & 7: Final blocks of practice-based learning to further develop skills and knowledge in a clinical setting
Placements
Students undertake a minimum of 1000 hours of clinical placements across the three years of study, gaining experience in various settings, including National Health Service Trusts, private hospitals, charities, and sports clubs.
Fees and Finance
- Tuition Fees: The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students, subject to parliamentary approval
- NHS Funding: Students may be eligible to receive a non-repayable grant of at least £5,000 each year, with further information available on the NHS Learning Support Fund website
