Program Overview
Overview
The Practice Education for Paramedics (HHH3010) course is designed for qualified paramedics working within the Ambulance Service. It aims to prepare students to act as practice educators to students studying on pre-registration paramedic education programmes, approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), as well as newly qualified paramedics during their preceptorship period.
Course Details
- This course was developed in consultation with local employers and will enable students to meet the standard for ‘Practice Educators’ (College of Paramedics 2017).
- Students will undertake most of their learning in practice through their work with students, supervised by an experienced practice educator (paramedic) who will support them in applying teaching and learning theory and research to their teaching in clinical practice.
- Practice-based learning will be supported through research-informed taught sessions and directed activities, providing students with an opportunity to develop their critical thinking skills and enhance their knowledge and skills in facilitating learning in paramedic practice.
Key Information
Entry Requirements
- Students must be a qualified Paramedic, registered with the HCPC.
- They must be able to identify and negotiate access to relevant opportunities and experiences of mentoring in order to demonstrate their skills and competencies in Practice Education.
- They must be able to access supervision from an appropriately experienced mentor.

Teaching and Assessment
- The course follows the requirements of the College of Paramedics (2017), standard for Practice Educators.
- Practice-based learning will be supported through research-informed online sessions and supervision by an experienced practice educator (paramedic), where students will be supported in applying teaching and learning theory and research to their teaching in clinical practice.
- Students will be assessed through a presentation and submission of a portfolio, where they will evidence that they have met the standard for ‘Practice Educators’ (College of Paramedics 2017).
Fees and Finance
- This course is eligible for funding from Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber. Detailed guidance on such funding arrangements is available in their funding guide.
- In 2025/26, the part-time tuition fee for UK students at the University of Huddersfield is £1587 per 20 credit module (see Fees and finance for exceptions).
- Tuition fees will cover the cost of study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision, and examinations.
- The following funding options are available:
- Employer funding, these arrangements are made between the student and their employing authority.
- Self-funding.
Career Support
- The course will assist students in gaining the competencies required to become a Practice Educator for Paramedics. Upon successful completion, students will be awarded a Practice Educator qualification at Honours (FHEQ Level 6).
