Program Overview


Overview of the Sport and Exercise Science BSc(Hons) Degree

The Sport and Exercise Science BSc(Hons) degree at the University of Huddersfield aims to develop students' scientific and critical understanding of issues relevant to sport and exercise, to improve both performance and health. This degree brings together a diverse and fascinating range of subjects, including anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, psychology, and nutrition.


Why Study Sport and Exercise Science BSc(Hons)

As well as delving into sport and exercise science on campus, students will gain real-world experience on a work placement in their second year, while also putting the skills and knowledge gained on the course to the test. This provides the opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience that employers are looking for in graduates. In the final year, students will complete a student-led research project.

Students will be taught by lecturers with a wealth of experience, who are research-active and helping to shape real-world practice, meaning students will learn the very latest industry knowledge. The course is endorsed by The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), enabling students to gain industry-recognized standards and qualifications.

Placements

The course includes a compulsory 140-hour work placement in the second year, in an appropriate environment, helping students to relate theory to practice and develop skills in a real work context. Previous placement providers have included strength and conditioning, professional sports clubs, primary and secondary schools, further education colleges, local authority sport development and physical activity units, primary care trusts, research assistants, and private physical activity and sport providers.

  • Watt Bike's in-built tests help establish training

  • MaxRack used for practical strength training tests
  • F-Scan provides foot function and gait analysis
  • Cybex NORM rehabilitation and testing system
  • The Bod POD measures individual's body composition

Career Opportunities

Previous graduates from the Division of Sport, Exercise and Public Health have gone on to work in education, research, teaching, community and social services in organizations including the NHS, Huddersfield Giants RLFC, Halifax RLFC, Barnsley Council, Kirklees Active Leisure, Huddersfield Town FC, Liverpool FC, Everton FC, Manchester United, Leicester City FC, Project Sport, and Nuffield Health.


Fees and Finance

The maximum fees for UK-based students on undergraduate courses in 2025/26 will be £9,535 per year for full-time students (subject to parliamentary approval). Tuition fees will cover the cost of study at the University as well as charges for registration, tuition, supervision, and examinations.

When enrolling as a student of the University, study and time will be governed by the University's terms and conditions, Handbook of Regulations, and associated policies. The University may make changes to courses for various reasons, including to improve the student experience or due to circumstances outside of its control. In such cases, the University will notify affected students as soon as possible and work with them to reduce any adverse effects. If a course is discontinued or suspended, a formal exit strategy will be followed in accordance with the student protection plan.
