Overview
The Sustainable Practices in the Textile and Fashion Industry (Distance Learning) course is designed for professionals working in the fashion and textile industry and its supply chains who aim to improve their sustainable practices. Developed in partnership with the UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT), this short course explores the concepts of sustainability in fashion and textiles, enhancing knowledge and understanding of sustainable processes and practices.
What you’ll learn
On this course, you will:
- Examine strategies to improve sustainability in various aspects of textile processing, such as yarn and fabric manufacturing, textile dyeing, and finishing processes.
- Be introduced to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), enabling you to evaluate the environmental impact associated with different textile and fashion products and processes throughout their entire lifecycle.
- Learn how to use an LCA toolkit effectively and apply this knowledge to your own business practice.
- Earn 5 academic credits, which could be used as Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) towards future study.
How you’ll learn
This short course is delivered 100% online, comprising approximately 50 hours of study. You will access all teaching and learning materials, including content from the UKFT’s library, via Brightspace, the University’s interactive Virtual Learning Environment.

Teaching and Assessment
The course leverages digital learning activities, encompassing a mix of asynchronous and synchronous approaches. Asynchronous learning activities include pre-recorded lectures, quizzes, and forums, allowing you to study at your own convenience. Synchronous sessions feature live seminars and interactive discussions, fostering a collaborative learning environment and deep topic exploration.
Technology and System Requirements
As a Distance Learning student, you must provide and have access to the following IT equipment and facilities to access your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and fully participate on your course:
- Personal computer (courses are designed for personal computers; some content may not be fully accessible via mobile devices).
- Internet connection with sufficient bandwidth to allow video streaming (4Mps minimum).
- Microphone and webcam.
- Browser: Latest versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Microsoft Edge.
- Minimum Specifications:
- Hardware: Headphones, soundcard, and speakers, microphone, and webcam.
- Operating Systems: Windows 10 or later, Mac OS X 10.13 or later, Linux (64-bit distribution), Android OS 10, 11, or 12, iOS 13 or 14.
- Other software requirements: Microsoft Teams, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Office 365, with access provided as a University of Huddersfield student.
Fees and Finance
- Tuition Fees (part-time): £1,600 for UK and international students in the academic year 2025/26.
- The University may increase tuition fees each year to ensure distance learning fees are competitive and/or in line with RPI-X, the rate of inflation set by the government.
