English as a Second Language (ESL) Intensive

About the Program

This course is intended to help intensive students improve their comprehension and real-world use of English in all four skill areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Learning Outcome

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will have demonstrated:

• Correct usage of English grammar in writing and speaking.
• Effective speaking ability in English and being understood.
• Effective oral presentations on topics and communication skills.
• Sound listening skills and response skills.
• Reading speed and comprehension of written text.
• Use of vocabulary – both pronunciation and understanding context.

Admission Requirements

Students are required to be 19 years of age prior to the start of the program or possess a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND:

• Completion of the Excel’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Advanced course
• Completion of grades 9-11, including English 10 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher from a country where English is one of the principal languages
• Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction
• Evidence of graduation from a language program with an established pathway/articulation agreement allowing direct entry (no further testing required) to a diploma or degree program at a public institution in Canada
• Provide verified results for one of the English language proficiency tests listed below. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program:
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic – 7+
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT – 95+
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) – 70+
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – Listening 9+, Speaking 9+, Reading 9+, Writing 9+
  • Duolingo English Test (DET) – 135+
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) – 75+
  • Cambridge English Qualifications (FCE, CPE) – C1+ (CEFR Level)
