English as a Second Language (ESL) Upper-Intermediate Program

Program Description

This course is intended to help upper-intermediate students improve their comprehension and real-world use of English in all four skill areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.


Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the learner will have demonstrated:


  • Correct usage of English grammar in writing and speaking.
  • Effective speaking ability in English and being understood.
  • Effective oral presentations on topics and communication skills.
  • Sound listening skills and response skills.
  • Reading speed and comprehension of written text.
  • Use of vocabulary – both pronunciation and understanding context.

Admission Requirements

Students are required to be 19 years of age prior to the start of the program or possess a high school diploma (or equivalent) AND:


  • Completion of the Excel’s English as a Second Language (ESL) Intermediate course, or
  • Completion of grades 9-11, including English 10 with a grade of ‘C’ or higher from a country where English is one of the principal languages, or
  • Completion of 2 years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English is the language of instruction, or
  • Evidence of graduation from a language program with an established pathway/articulation agreement allowing direct entry (no further testing required) to a diploma or degree program at a public institution in Canada, or
  • Provide verified results for one of the English language proficiency tests listed below. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program:
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic – 5-6
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT – 41-60
    • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) – 40-49
    • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) – Listening 5-7, Speaking 5-7, Reading 5-7, Writing 5-7
    • Duolingo English Test (DET) – 86-110
    • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) – 36-55
    • Cambridge English Qualifications (FCE, CPE) – B1-B2 (CEFR Level)
