About Program
Program Overview
Wastewater Engineering
The Wastewater Engineering program provides a comprehensive understanding of the design and operation of unit processes in the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters. It covers:
- A basic understanding of the design and operation of unit processes in the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters.
- An understanding of biological principles and parameters
- An introduction to recent developments and more advanced techniques in biological wastewater treatment
- Knowledge of the physical, chemical and biological principles in wastewater assessment and treatment
- Basic analytical and the latest molecular microbial ecology skills through laboratory analysis of wastewater and sludge samples
Learning Outcomes
The program aims to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- To acquire an understanding of the fundamental scientific concepts and detailed technical know-how of the technologies required for water supply and treatment for drinking and industrial purposes.
- To gain a general understanding of the legal and health issues associated with water supply.
- To understand the principles involved in the design and selection of appropriate unit processes.
- To be able to estimate water demand.
- To be able to determine free chlorine residuals for break-point chlorination and the kinetics of pathogen kill.
- To be able to select and design appropriate water treatment unit processes.
- To be able to calculate design specifications for unit processes to treat raw water of a particular quality to a particular quality.
Course Agenda
The program is delivered through a combination of:
- Lectures
- Small group teaching
- Practical sessions
- Reading materials Additionally, students will have the opportunity to attend a field trip, visiting a water treatment site.
