Program Overview


Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)

The Introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) course is designed to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of PLCs.


Learning Outcomes

On satisfactory completion of this course, learners should be able to:


  • Identify the fundamental concepts of PLC
  • Recognise the different programming methods used in PLCs
  • Apply basic software and hardware skills for PLCs
  • Evaluate the performance of a PLC control system
  • Design a PLC system using appropriate methods
  • Assess the performance of a range of case examples

Course Agenda

The course has been designed to cover two full days with four sessions for each day; two sessions in the morning and two sessions in the afternoon. Each session will be around 90 minutes.


Day 1

The sessions for the first day are:


  • Definitions, Structure, I/O Devices, Advantages and Applications
  • Designing a System, Programming Methods and Examples
  • Exercises and Examples based on LD and FBD
  • More Exercises, Timers and Counters, respectively

Day 2

The sessions for the second day are:


  • Hardware and Software Setup with Gates Logic Implementations
  • Control the Speed of a Conveyor Belt
  • Timers and Counters
  • Robotic Arm Control
